AFTER CARE
By following these guidelines, your piercing will heal properly and stay free from complications.
Cleaning Your Piercing:
-
Wash your hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching or cleaning your piercing.
-
Use Sea Salt Solution: Mix 1/4 tsp of sea salt in 8 oz of warm water or use H2Ocean sea salt spray. This is the only solution you should use for cleaning your piercing.
-
Avoid Harmful Products: Never use alcohol, peroxide, or Neosporin (or any other anti-bacterial ointments) on a healing piercing. These products can harm your piercing by over-cleansing, which strips away beneficial bacteria that aid in healing, leaving the area vulnerable to bad bacteria and infection.
DISCHARGE:
-
It’s normal for a piercing to discharge a whitish/yellowish secretion during the healing process. These crusts can be gently removed with a Q-tip soaked in warm water or a sea salt solution.
-
If crusties are difficult to remove, soak a cotton ball in warm water or sea salt solution, hold it against the piercing for a few minutes, and then gently wipe with a Q-tip. Never pick at the crusts as this can irritate the piercing.
DO NOT OVER CLEAN:
-
Clean your piercing twice a day. Over-cleaning can slow the healing process by irritating the area or disrupting the growth of new, healthy cells.
Health Healing:
-
Your overall health, including diet, rest, and lifestyle, significantly affects how quickly your piercing will heal. A healthier lifestyle will promote faster healing.
-
Avoid aggressive cleaning and playing with your piercing. Pulling or moving the jewelry can tear the newly forming cells, restarting the healing process and extending your recovery time.
After Care per Piercing:
Nostril:
-
Healing Time: 4 months.
-
Care: Avoid inserting anything into your nose during the healing period to prevent infection and irritation.
Septum:
-
Healing Time: 4-6 months.
-
Care: You can begin flipping your septum up/down the day after the piercing. Clean your piercing every time you flip it to avoid crust buildup. Crusts can form and make movement difficult, so clean beforehand to ease this.
Navel:
-
Healing Time: 6 months.
-
Care: Avoid tight clothing around your navel to prevent snagging or irritation. Harsh soaps should be avoided, and swimming in bodies of water or hot tubs is discouraged. If swimming is necessary, use a waterproof bandage to protect the piercing from bacteria, which could lead to rejection or infection.
Nipples:
-
Healing Time:
-
Males: 3-4 months.
-
Females: 6 months.
-
-
Care: Going braless is not recommended during healing. Wearing a bra or sports bra can help with soreness in the early days post-piercing.
Cartilage:
-
Types: Rook, Conch, Tragus, Helix, Industrial, Snug, Daith.
-
Healing Time: 6-9 months.
-
Care: Do not change the jewelry for at least 6 months. Avoid sleeping on or twisting the piercing, as cartilage piercings are delicate and prone to complications.
Microdermal:
-
Healing Time: 2 months.
-
Care: Use a bandage for the first 7 days to help the anchor settle. Without proper bandaging, the piercing may shift, raise, or fall out. Clean the piercing once a day and avoid attempting to clean behind the dermal topper. After 2 months, you may change the topper, preferably with the help of a piercing professional.
Eyebrow/Bridge:
-
Healing Time: 2-4 months.
-
Care: Do not twist, move, or change the jewelry during healing. Your piercer may recommend downsizing the jewelry eventually.
Female Genital:
-
Healing Time: 6 weeks.
-
Care: Important: All piercings create an open channel to your bloodstream. Sexual contact, particularly unprotected, may pose a risk to both you and your partner during healing. Urine is sterile and can help clean the piercing but should not replace the recommended aftercare routine. Female genital piercings tend to heal quickly and easily, though it is common for labia and hood piercings to bleed for a few days after the procedure.
